Road, gravel

I didn't discover endurance cycling until I was 35, when I signed up for Seattle to Portland (a double-century weekend ride) and was immediately hooked. Group rides quickly turned into friendships with local road racers, who convinced me to try racing. I fell in love with it and soon traded soccer and softball for bikes.

After a season trying to figure out training on my own, I set my sights on Masters Road Nationals and hired a cycling coach to help me land on the podium. I was surprised when I went from Cat 5 to Cat 2 in two seasons and found myself on podiums alongside professional riders and even world champions. I learned firsthand how powerful structured training, accountability, and the right guidance can be.

Alongside road racing, I've spent years adventure riding across the west coast and beyond, including trips through Tuscany. I've been riding road bikes off road since before we called it "gravel riding," and I still enjoy pushing 25mm tires across mixed-surface routes.

These days I race less, but I am an athlete to my core. I know that consistent, structured training helps me stay engaged, accountable, and ready to throw down on a hard group ride. I also understand the time, energy, joy, and frustration that come with pursuing performance while balancing the rest of life.

My approach to coaching is grounded in curiosity and self-awareness. I believe athletes do their best when they become students of themselves and of the sport, learning how their bodies respond to training, discovering what motivates them, and building a sustainable rhythm that keeps them progressing. Whether someone is preparing for a specific event or simply wants to feel like the athlete they know they are, the process of training can be rewarding in its own right.

Off the bike, I enjoy cooking, home projects, and traveling the world with my wife. I spent six years on the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA) board of directors and currently serve on the executive board of One Tail at a Time PDX dog rescue. Our rescue pup Dracula is also an athlete; she appeared in Puppy Bowl XVI.
