COACHING PHILOSOPHY

MY APPROACH TO COACHING.

For me, coaching is about accountability and creating a recipe for success through my experience, the available science, and the athlete's schedule. Then I build a tailored/personalized plan to reflect the athlete's personal objectives and time allotment. Aside from the numbers and data, it’s about connecting multi-dimensionally with my clients and navigating them to success through my own extensive experience as a top-level domestic and international pro cyclist.

Regardless of your goals/objectives/ability, I have never had an athlete/client not improve via race results, FTP/threshold, or any other metric.

THE FULL STORY

ABOUT ME AS A COACH.

My Schwinn Sting-Ray was my vehicle of exploration. I rode that bike every day after school until the tires were bald! Eventually graduating to BMX racing in my early teens, I always felt that I belonged on a "real" bike, so by the age of 15, I switched to road cycling and began training nearly everyday, traveling to local/regional events. By the time I reached my late teens, I realized that I loved traveling the country/world as much as I did riding/racing bikes. As a member of USA national team, I was seeing parts of the world that I'm not sure I would have ever seen otherwise. I turned professional at age 24 (which is relatively late by today's standards), but I certainly feel as though I maximized my professional career, as I retired just prior to my 41st birthday. This journey has taken me to all 50 states in the USA, 45 countries, and 5 continents.

Growing up in the midwest, I've always loved/appreciated having four seasons and the transition from one season to another. For that reason I have resided in Boulder, Colorado, for the last four decades. When I'm not in the saddle, I enjoy XC-skiing, live music, cooking, tweaking my various bikes, ping pong, and planning my next trip!

IN THEIR WORDS

ATHLETES ON COACH SCOTT

Coach Scott is the best! He keeps me on track with my very limited saddle time during the work week. He will make adjustments due to travel or illness and keep me in top form so I can crush my club ride buddies every weekend.  - Justine V.

I love working with Scott Moninger. I’ve won six national championships in a variety of events and a world championship with him as my coach. We are a good team. As an athlete he understands me very well. He doesn’t need to cloud the relationship with a lot of conversation. We get the work done we talk when we need to and I feel like he’s always there for me as an athlete. I trust him and I trust his process. I know he’ll get me there and then I do the work.  - Tracey J.

Scott is amazing. It’s the first time I really feel like there is a big picture, not just a race by race plan. I’m going into the season feeling calm and confident with the overall plan for success. I had some serious setbacks this off season due to a very freak situation that landed me in the hospital for a week. Scott kept me calm and got me back safely. I’m now off to my first race of the season and feel excited about where my body is at. Thank you!  - Chavon R.

I enjoy the plan and workouts and feel they are carefully structured.  - Doron L.

He's been a great mentor. I strongly believe he's going to help me (I mean he already has) get back in racing shape and better than before. Can't wait for this riding season and beyond. Thank you!   - Kae T.
