COACHING PHILOSOPHY

MY APPROACH TO COACHING.

I believe great coaching is both a science and an art. Training data and physiology matter, but so do communication, trust, experience, and understanding the individual athlete. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all training. I work in partnership to understand each athlete’s goals, strengths, challenges, and life demands, then build a thoughtful and sustainable path forward. Whether you’re preparing for your first major cycling challenge, pursuing a personal best, stepping into ultra-endurance riding, or simply wanting to become a stronger and more confident cyclist, my goal is to help you train with purpose, enjoy the process, and discover just how much you’re capable of.

THE FULL STORY

ABOUT ME AS A COACH.

My training wheels came off at age five, and I’ve been a lifelong athlete ever since. I competed in collegiate track, but after a knee injury changed my path, I discovered cycling, and I never looked back.

What began as a new way to stay active grew into a lifelong passion for riding, racing, and coaching. Cycling has taken me from local roads to national championships and ultra-endurance events, and ultimately to a career helping other athletes discover what they’re capable of.

I hold a master’s degree in Athletic Training and Coaching and have been a USA Cycling (USAC) Certified Elite Coach for more than twenty years. My approach combines education, decades of coaching experience, and the perspective that comes from being an athlete myself.

When I’m not coaching or riding, I share life in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley with my wife, Liz, who is also a BaseCamp coach, and our jackahuahua, Rainey.

THE RÉSUMÉ

MY PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENTS.

My approach to coaching is grounded in both education and firsthand experience. I’ve competed in Race Across America (RAAM), Race Across the West, and numerous other ultra-cycling events, and I’m a former Master's National and California State cycling champion across multiple disciplines. Those experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the physical, mental, and practical demands athletes face, from balancing training with everyday life to preparing for ambitious endurance goals.

IN THEIR WORDS

ATHLETES ON COACH JILL

Jill is fantastic. I am so grateful to be and love working with her. She is engaged and demonstrates a strong interest in my success. She's clearly knows her stuff and shares it freely. She has a wealth of resources to help with my training and prescribes fun, creative, and doable workouts so that I can enjoy the great outdoors while also improving my fitness. For example - she'll assign "pick your favorite hill ride and do X." This is so much easier and enjoyable than trying to ride a series of complex intervals while trying to keep my eye on the road. My fitness and confidence has come a long way since working with her. My FTP has increased to 170 to 185! Wow!  - Dagmar B.

Jill is super flexible with my summer travel plans and time away from riding, and making a solid training plan that maximizes every week.  - Stacy W.

I really enjoy working with Jill. She's very easy to talk to and really listens and helps with all my issues!!! She's a gem!!!   - Sue H.

My main goal so far has been returning from injury...Jill has definitely guided me to a smooth transition back to training, and this was the number one priority for me. I'm looking forward to working with her as I build fitness over the winter!   - Beverly F.
