COACHING PHILOSOPHY
MY APPROACH TO COACHING.
I think athletes do best when training fits around their life, not the other way round. So my job isn't just to write a plan; it's to help you understand what to do, why it matters, and how it actually fits with work, family, and everything else you've got going on. That means I'm always working with two sources of information: the data from TrainingPeaks and WKO5, and what you tell me about how training is actually landing, your energy, sleep, motivation, all of it. I don't fully trust either one on its own; the numbers and the conversation are there to check each other.
I also try not to treat any two athletes the same way, even when they're chasing similar goals on a similar timeline. What works for one rider often doesn't transfer cleanly to the next, so the plan tends to shift as we go rather than sticking rigidly to a template.
Above all, I want improvement to feel sustainable rather than overwhelming. Progress, as I see it, comes from steady consistency over weeks and months, not one standout session, and I care just as much about whether you're actually enjoying the riding, because that's usually what keeps people training in the first place.
It's worth saying that quite a few of my athletes end up training with me for several seasons, coming back each year with a new goal. I don't think that's the point in itself, but more a sign that the fundamentals, individualised plans, sensible load, clear communication, are working the way they should.
Now at BaseCamp I'm part of a coaching team that shares this focus on community and long-term progress, and what I'm really trying to do is help you build strength, consistency, and a genuine enjoyment of riding along the way.
THE FULL STORY
ABOUT ME AS A COACH.
My career was in electronic engineering and consulting, and what carried over into coaching is less the qualifications themselves and more the skills underneath them: a solid grounding in data science and the discipline of translating what a client actually needs into a practical, workable solution. I hold British Cycling and TrainingPeaks coaching certifications, and I use TrainingPeaks and WKO5 to plan, monitor and adjust training. I'm also the official training partner for the 6 Points Cycling Challenge charity event in Mallorca and for The King's Trust's cycling fundraising events.
I've completed several multi-day endurance rides myself, including LEJOG, Roscoff to Mont Ventoux, Mallorca 312, London to Paris, and tours across Portugal and Italy. Taking those on with the same uncertainty my athletes often describe before their own big goals is part of what informs how I coach them towards theirs. Other than cycling, I played rugby at school level and endurance running at county level. I also obtained a purple belt in karate. However, most of those impact sports were curtailed by injury. Given that cycling, among many things, is a low impact sport, it gives me balance and enables the pursuit of long-term mental and physical health benefits that we need in this fast moving and uncertain world.
Outside of coaching, you'll usually find me exploring new roads or enjoying a good coffee.

IN THEIR WORDS
ATHLETES ON COACH GRANT
Any time i contact Grant, he always gets back with an hour or so. Grant will often offer a call if i need any help. 10 weeks and he got me completing lejog, 1000 miles over 14 days. I wasnt exhausted as grant daily gave me feedback daily on my stats and reminders if my hr when it went a little higher to drink.im thrilled. I feel as if lejog was a jolly ride each day instead of a challenge. Through out training grant has guided me not just on training, but nutrition and anything techincal. Im so happy with him.Thankyou mr goodman!!!!! - Jacqui S.
This is my first experience working with a cycling coach so I didn’t enter into it with any specific expections. I’ve cycled on and off for 20+ years without ever putting any thought into how to improve. I started working with Grant with a more or less broad goal of receiving help training for an upcoming event and seeing where that led to. A few weeks in I’ve already begun to see the benefits of his guidance and structured approach as I am now feeling I’ve made more progress in the past few weeks than I had expected to. - Joan M.
Grant helped me train smart for the Leadville 100 MTB race and I finished 45 minutes ahead of my 10-hour goal. The plan was tailored and science-based with clear workouts, smart progressions, and weekly check-ins that kept me accountable. Grant’s guidance on pacing, altitude prep, and fueling was spot on, and the taper had me ready on race day. Highly recommended for anyone chasing a big endurance milestone. Thanks! - Mike H.
Grant has excellent knowledge, an ability to explain and reason around why things must be done and a calm and adaptable approach to getting the right result. For me that result was completing LeJog on schedule with no drama. - Christopher
Grant listened to my concerns and devised a training schedule that fitted around my incredibly busy job. It’s now been 3 months and I can’t believe how much stronger and more consistent I am at climbing. I’ve really enjoyed watching my numbers improve week after week along with all the motivational support Grant provided. Thank you Grant for turning my lofty goal into a reality. I honestly couldn’t have done it without you. - Belinda
Grant guided and supported me through a structured plan that resulted in me fulfilling my dream, as a competitor, representing my country in the UCI World Amateur Road Race Championships in Perth, Scotland. I didn't make the podium but that was never a part of the dream, but I did compete and produced the best ride of my life. The progress was beyond my expectations for such a short training period, with most of the important metrics improving by between 20-25%. - Phillip
I have been training with Grant for over a year now and it’s been a fantastic journey. I could not recommend him enough. He is experienced, knowledgeable, engaging, empathetic and always encourages you to reach for your best. I have over-achieved my goals with Grant's guidance and support, increased my power and become the fittest I have ever been. From his calm and engaging style, great listening skills, and always interesting insights, I enjoyed our discussions, and appreciated Grant's willingness to always accommodate whatever comes up and support me to work through it and continue to train. Highly recommended as a coach, 5 star experience. - Abud
I engaged Grant as a Coach in August '21 when I decided to do the Mallorca 312 . I can honestly say I've never been better prepared for an ultra race event and I peaked right at the exact right time. - Ronan
The whole package from Grant has been second to none, his support and guidance has been fantastic nothing was too much trouble, with regular reviews I could constantly see myself progressing everything was explained in a way I could understand. My training was adjusted constantly to help me improve area's of weakness, things that I was not aware of this has transformed my cycling in every way. I'm enjoying my cycling even more now that I'm fitter and stronger all down to Grant. - Darrell
