COACHING PHILOSOPHY

MY APPROACH TO COACHING.

I believe successful coaching starts with understanding the person behind the athlete. Your goals matter, but so do your life, experience, strengths, limitations, and motivations, as well as the amount of physical and mental energy you can bring to training. The best training plan is only effective if it works for the individual athlete.

I use data extensively, but I don’t coach numbers; I coach people. Power, heart rate, breathing, training load, and other metrics help us understand what is happening, but they’re only part of the picture. How you feel, what you’re experiencing, and what we learn through ongoing communication are equally important. My job is to bring those pieces together and continually ask, “What is this athlete telling me, and what do they need next?”

I also want athletes to understand the why behind their training. Coaching shouldn't create dependency; it should help you become a more knowledgeable, confident, and self-aware athlete. Progress isn’t always a higher FTP, a faster time, or a podium. Sometimes it's becoming more consistent, learning to listen to your body, developing confidence, or discovering that something you once thought was beyond your reach is now possible.

Ultimately I see coaching as a partnership built around communication, curiosity, and a shared willingness to keep learning.

THE FULL STORY

ABOUT ME AS A COACH.

I started racing BMX when I was ten years old, and since 1986 I haven’t missed a year standing on a starting line. What began on a BMX bike has grown into a lifelong pursuit of endurance sport and a curiosity about just how far we can push ourselves, both physically and mentally.

Over the years I’ve competed across road, gravel, mountain biking, cyclocross, triathlon, Ironman, Ultraman, and ultra-running. I began coaching shortly after college and have now spent more than 25 years working with athletes ranging from beginners taking on their first big challenge to experienced competitors pursuing national-level results.

One of the most meaningful parts of that journey has been my work with Achilles International as a guide and tandem pilot for athletes with disabilities. I've had the privilege of guiding Francesco Magisano to multiple USA Para-Cycling National Championship podiums and through challenges including Ironman Arizona and Ultraman Florida, where in 2023 he became the first blind athlete to finish the event.

Those experiences have shaped how I coach. I want to understand the person behind the athlete: their goals, life, strengths, limitations, and what excites them about the challenge ahead. From there, I combine experience, science, communication, and curiosity to help each athlete find the path that works for them.

I’m also still very much an athlete myself. I continue to race, train, experiment, and learn, always asking many of the same questions I encourage my athletes to ask: What can I improve? What can I learn? What’s next?

I’m a USA Cycling Level 3 Coach, IRONMAN University Certified Coach, F.I.S.T. Certified Bike Fitter, and Oxygen Advantage Advanced Instructor based in Hinesburg, Vermont.

IN THEIR WORDS

ATHLETES ON COACH BRIAN

Brian continues to be a fantastic coach and excellent coach for me. He's creative with his approach and helpful in answering all of my questions. I also appreciate that after a year of coaching, he is looking back on the previous year(s) and brainstorming, with me, about how to keep improving, build on the past year, and keep things interesting. I'm really grateful to have Brian as much coach. I'll add he is incredibly patient which helps because I am incredibly high maintenance at times. :-)   - Laura R.

Switching over to BaseCamp and working with Brian is exactly what i wanted out of my training experience. I not only wanted the "what" but i also wanted the "why" and that's exactly what i am getting. The support, communication and systematic approach has been extremely helpful for me. I no longer go into workouts questioning if i am on the right path or doing what i need to. Now i am equipped with the knowledge and reasoning behind the workouts which makes completing them easier. I can wait for race season and the chance to put this new mindset and ability to the test.  - Tyler C.

I am really enjoying the Base Camp experience after 15+ years of triathlon focused coaching. Brian has able to quickly pinpoint my limiters and target the workouts to help me improve.  - Kathryn M.

Brian has been very easy to communicate with, understanding of my goals and proactive about adding value. Has been a great experience so far.  - George G.

Brian has been absolutely wonderful to work with. He is providing a framework that helps make sense of the madness I am undertaking in August!  - Jason D.

I really enjoy his huge overall knowledge of contributing factors to health and the ability to train well and the affect of outside stress on performance. I enjoy his scientific approach and ability to think outside the box when presented with unique situations. He is a great communicator and supporter of each of his athletes.  - Jane F.

Brian is the best coach I have ever worked with.  - Trish V.
